3 Migrants in a Boat

To say Nothing of the Smuggler
An installation set as a fictional trip of three migrants and a smuggler on a small rubber boat (dinghy) that is going upstream river Evros at night. Based on sketches, dialogs and jokes from the popular comedy classic book Three Men in a Boat (to Say Nothing of the Dog) by Jerome K Jerome, but instead the river Thames is Evros, the men are desperate migrants, the dog a smuggler, and the trip takes place at night without any light.

Based on real situations of migrants crossing the river Evros between Turkey and Greece and, according to some sources, “Evros has the largest number of buried and unidentified migrants in Greece”.

Unique: a popular comic scenario is put in a contemporary but absurd context and with a lot of humor and funny situations which will provoke empathy towards migrants in the audience, who are put in the position of the border guards by the author.

Audience
Can be presented as a performance in a gallery, museum and experimental theatre, or as part of an art or art/tech festival.

The audience can enter and leave the installation without interruption, as their number is limited by available NVDs.
3 levels:
— Performers, observed by audience
— Audience intervenes in the installation
— Audience waiting to enter, watches projection of
migration-related media materials
Production
The scene is set with a rubber dinghy, in an indoor space, with a big panoramic projection of the river banks around the scene, set in infrared, only perceived by someone wearing night vision devices (NVDs). Up to 9 audience members equipped with NVDs can walk around the rubber boat, and observe the conversation without being seen (becoming the border guards).
People in the boat are amateur/volunteer actors (anonymous, if preferred) with a sound prompter, for a 90-minutes full length performance.
Production
The project needs a space that could be darkened completely – a gallery, a museum or theater. The optimum space is 8 × 10 m. All the equipment will be provided by the author but electricity plugs, a place for installing projectors on the ceiling and a big projection screen or white wall must be provided on site.

All the technical setup, video and audio editing will be prepared preliminarily. The installation, preparation and very short rehearsal with actors/amateurs on site will take two days. One day for deinstallation.

Each performance will last 90 min, with 30 min between them. There could be about 2 performances per day.
