Immigrant Road Fanzine

Low-fi, DIY fanzines narrating the different, mostly humorous events that happened to the immigrants on their way to Europe, done by/with/for immigrants. Collages, drawings, jokes and appropriated images from popular comics and magazines are used to narrate the different experiences and stories from the immigrant communities…

There is a long tradition of street papers during 20th century. In the United States, during the Great Depression, when literally millions of people were displaced and started moving from the once verdant field turned dust bowls, those wandering people looking for work, colloquially known as hobos, had their own magazines. These magazines were written, illustrated, edited and not only distributed by homeless people on the move. What is even more important these same homeless people were the primary audience for those magazines.

They brought news on the places where you could find work, stories from the road (mostly humorous), explained secret alphabet of signs that they used to communicate on the road and even provided how-to instructions for riding freight-trains without getting caught. We find it speaks volumes that today in the Europe, faced with the great influx of young, creative and witty people coming from Middle East and North Africa fleeing brutal wars and acute poverty we, citizens of Europe, are deprived of their voices and stories and that they don't have even small platform through which they can share their experiences from the road.

Darinka Pop-Mitić & Svebor Midžić are an ad hoc artistic group The Joke and its relation to… We are leaving up to you to decide who is The Joke and who is whatever comes after three dots. We have mostly been making and exhibiting art and can be lazy about writing project proposals and administration in general.
Dara is a trained painter and real artist and Svebor has graduated international law but then instead of becoming copyright lawyer decided to practice art. So there's a joke for you. Besides that we have attended School for History and Theory of Images in Belgrade, that mostly concentrated on the relation between psychoanalysis and politics.
Guess who did what: Freelance artist, translator, dog-walking (in NYC no less), kosher catering (real deal Brooklyn Hasidic one), journalism (gossip page in defunct mob-related tabloid), artist's assistant, curator (of a small exhibition and uncredit), editor, screenplay writer, street vendor…

I am an artist who focuses on urban life, migration and gentrification. I am also an art teacher.

I have studied painting in a fine arts school. I am also an art teacher since 2000, in a high school. Art is a great way to understand people and to express ourselves. The way to say something to people.

As an artist and a teacher, I work with youth, I run a humour club and we publish a humour fanzine. I also do art workshops with young kids and teenagers who live in neighborhoods that are under stress because of factors such as gentrification.
Audience
Migrants as creators of the fanzine/street newspaper, other migrants + everyone else as readers.
Production
Indoor locations, preferably spaces with access to xerox machine, large tables, blackboards and other teaching/office materials.

We would also need translators and access to the local immigrant community.
